With more than 1000 employees, our client is a leading global insurance broker, operating in 140 countries, specializing in risk management and insurance solutions across various sectors, including property, casualty, marine, aviation, and reinsurance. Benefiting from 200 years' experience, Tysers works with a wide network of corporate clients, offering tailored coverage and advisory services for unique risks. In the context of leadership change, our client is looking for a new Chief Operating Officer for our operations in Continental Europe. With a team of 120 people, principally London based, the candidate will take responsibility for business support, finance, HR, compliance and administration. The candidate will also assume the role of Managing Director of Tysers Belgium n.v. our subsidiary for continental business. Short term challenges will be to ensure the handover with current management, to establish an audit committee, to set up compliance structure and to implement the balanced scorecard (BSC) and to structure the management information (MI).

Job Description

  • Belgian companies' local statutory accounts
  • Directs and controls reporting to the Belgian Board and London
  • Responsible for all regulatory obligations linked to the business of the company, its subsidiaries and its UK Branch
  • Acting as overall coordinator and first line adviser to the London designated SMF function on business development
  • Establish and controls processes and practices within all the company businesses that ensure financial, compliance and risk management in line with Group standards



Implementing risk management & internal controls, with a coherent, user friendly BSC, the candidate will deliver on the following outcomes:

  • Participating in European Business Development (organic and external)
  • Maintaining framework in support of business
  • Preparing and organizing Belgian board meetings (quarterly)
  • Organizing and lead OpCo (monthly)
  • Organizing and lead RD Forum (monthly)
  • Liaising with divisional and functional heads and ensuring Belgium is considered in group decisions
  • Representing Tysers with EEA clients and liaising with FSMA
  • Controlling, monitoring RDs and PCPs requirements and training
  • Conducting relationships with investment institutions, regulators, partners, shareholders and the local financial/insurance community
  • Creates information-based and market insights to leverage business performance and change
  • The role holder is required to be familiar and comply with all company policies and procedures and responsible for adhering to the regulatory requirements that are required of the Company in Belgium and in the UK.

The Successful Applicant

  • More than 15 years' experience in Broking or Underwriting
  • Previous experience managing business unit P&L
  • Extensive experience in the general insurance industry, including marine
  • Experience of working for or with International Insurance businesses
  • Responsibility at a senior level for the analysis of financial information, operations and regulators partnerships
  • Understanding of the dynamics of the non-life insurance industry, in several European markets including detailed understanding of profit drivers
  • Master's degree in economics, business or alike. CII qualification is a plus
  • Project Management, Financial planning and modelling skills
  • Advanced ability to analyse complex financial and market data and understand the strategic implications thereof
  • Strong commercial and market awareness
  • Understanding market trends and how the company can adapt to these
  • Marine experience is a plus
  • Good report writing skills and ability
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow revenue & develop strategies to increase profits
  • Cultural awareness in understanding the sensitivities of being able to deal with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Record of successfully and measurably driving business growth in a complex regulated environment
  • High proficiency in English and Dutch or French is mandatory, German is a nice to have
