Job Description

Democratic Society (Demsoc) is looking for an experienced Chief Operating Officer who can get stuck in within our two organisations (one in Belgium and one in the UK). Demsoc are at an exciting stage of development where they are consolidating their corporate centre and wish to put into place an interim COO to consolidate and help strengthen Democratic Society's systems, practices and culture.The post holder will be a critical contributor to a governance system review as we implement recommendations from Mazars (a financial audit firm) with respect to financial and other systems - they will have strong backing from Demsoc's Belgian and UK boards to deliver a significant modernisation of the corporate functions within the organisation.The post holder will also lead the organisation through a process of simplification and rationalisation as we look to reduce overheads and increase our delivery effectiveness. The ideal candidate will be ready to work closely with the interim leadership team to bring professional skills and support.

The Successful Applicant

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills:

  • Operational leadership involving systems, change management and efficiency planning and implementation
  • Start up and/or turnaround experience would be useful
  • Grant management; both supporting bid writing and financial returns
  • Management of uncertain income flows
  • Agility and ability to work in a complex and project-based environment
  • Systems building and operating model, including (but not limited to)
    • Payroll across jurisdictions
    • Performance management
    • Annual reporting to the board
    • Quarterly reporting to the management team
    • Setting, implementation and monitoring of budgets
    • Strategic IT & operational support systems
