National Sales Manager, Yates and Seasol

South Eastern Suburbs Melbourne, Melbourne Permanent Home Office View Job Description
Two of Australia's best-loved garden brands are bringing their field teams together. Lead the change, build one high-performing team, and shape how Yates and Seasol win in-store.
  • Lead the newly combined Yates and Seasol field force
  • Category leader with iconic brands, part of DuluxGroup

About Our Client

Yates has been helping Australians grow things since 1887. Seasol has been the go to garden tonic for decades and is one of the most trusted brands in the shed. Together with Yates Home Pest, including Ratsak, the businesses span garden care, soils, seeds and plant health. It is the clear category leader in home garden across Bunnings, Mitre 10 and independent garden centres.

Yates and Seasol are part of DuluxGroup, alongside Dulux, Selleys, Cabot's and B&D. DuluxGroup is owned by Nippon Paint Holdings, one of the largest paint and coatings companies in the world. You get the feel and pace of a focused business unit, with the backing, investment and career options of a major group.

The businesses are investing in their future, adding well-known brands, building new capability and undertaking a significant digital transformation that will connect systems and create new ways of working over the coming years. The field team will sit at the centre of that evolution.

Job Description

Yates and Seasol are bringing their field teams together to create one integrated national field team. The teams already call on the same customers and work collaboratively together. Now they will come together with a broader portfolio, a new regional structure, and a more data-led approach to selling.

This is a newly shaped National Sales Manager role that will lead that transformation. You will step in as the transition gets underway and own it from there. Over the next 6 to 12 months, you will redesign how the team covers its stores, move it to data-led selling, and build one culture that is stronger than either team on its own.

It is a chance to put your mark on a field force at a turning point, with the full support of senior leadership.

Working closely with the GMs of Yates and Seasol and the broader sales leadership team, you will lead a national field team of around 20 people across NSW, VIC, QLD, WA and SA, through a team of Regional Sales Managers. As a key member of the Sales Leadership Team, you will help shape sales strategy, capability development, customer engagement and the continued evolution of our go-to-market model.

You will:

  • Lead the integration of the Yates and Seasol field teams into one national field sales team, and bring the people with you
  • Translate national, account and channel plans into clear field priorities, and deliver sales budgets and activation targets across Bunnings, Mitre 10 and independents
  • Redesign coverage, call cycles and territory deployment based on sales, profit and customer potential
  • Move the team to data-led, insight-driven store calls supported by AI and CRM tools, so every visit has a purpose. [alternative: Experience leading the adoption of CRM, sales force automation, reporting or digital sales tools]
  • Coach, develop, and lead your Regional Sales Managers, set clear expectations, and hold the team to a high standard
  • Build succession and bench strength, and create pathways for sales execs to move into bigger roles
  • Partner with the National Account and Channel teams as the in-store expert, delivering promotional, seasonal and brand activity consistently
  • Lead cycle planning, forecasting and performance rhythms, using data to spot risks and opportunities early
  • Bring market, customer and competitor insight back from the field into the business
  • Own the field sales cost centre and lead a strong safety culture, with a focus on safe driving, manual handling and working safely in customer environments
  • Be a positive, influential member of the sales and business leadership teams.

The Successful Applicant

You are an experienced field sales leader who has built and transformed teams, not just managed them. You think strategically, you are hungry for the next step, and you get your energy from developing people. You know how to lead change, create alignment and develop high-performing teams that consistently deliver results.

You will bring:

  • Significant field sales leadership experience, including leading regional or state managers across a geographically spread team
  • A track record of transforming a sales team, through restructure, territory redesign, integration or a new operating model
  • Strong retail knowledge, ideally in hardware, home and garden or consumer products sold through big box retail
  • Bunnings or Mitre 10 experience, which is a real advantage
  • Experience growing sales in a mature or seasonal category, with examples of creative ways you have won in store
  • Confidence using sales and customer data to make decisions, and getting a team to use it too. [alternative; An ability to use technology and data to improve customer outcomes, sales productivity and the quality of decision-making].Experience working across key account, channel and field sales teams to deliver national customer plans
  • Highly developed coaching, talent development and performance management capability
  • Commercial and analytical sharpness, linking field activity to customer outcomes and business results
  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills, comfortable in a large and complex business
  • Clear, compelling communication and the ability to run sales meetings and business updates that drive alignment
  • A tertiary qualification in Commerce, Marketing, Business or a related discipline

If you have not sold into Bunnings but have led a strong, relationship-driven field team in pharmacy, grocery, liquor or a similar channel, we still want to hear from you.

What’s on Offer

A senior sales leadership role with significant influence over the future direction of Yates and Seasol's go-to-market strategy.

  • The chance to lead a transformation with clear backing from the business
  • Iconic brands that Australians know, trust and use every weekend
  • A loyal, long-tenured team with a strong culture and very little politics. [alternative: An experienced team with deep customer knowledge and a collaborative culture]
  • A competitive package with base, super and STI
  • A Melbourne-based role in Clayton, with national travel
  • Genuine career progression across Yates, DuluxGroup and the wider Nippon Paint group, which has a track record of moving talent between businesses
  • Investment in data, systems and capability, so you are not doing it alone.
