Our client is an established international pharmaceutical company providing integrated solutions across drug development, licensing, regulatory affairs, commercialization and supply chain management.

With an established European platform and international network, the organization is further strengthening its presence in China and is looking for an experienced Business Development Director to lead licensing and partnership activities connecting China with Europe, the US and other international markets.

This is a highly entrepreneurial and externally focused role for an experienced pharmaceutical business development professional with a strong China network and the ability to originate and develop cross-border opportunities.

Job Description



The Business Development Director, China will lead and coordinate licensing and business development activities across China, with responsibility for both inbound-to-China and China-to-global opportunities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the identification, evaluation and development of pharmaceutical licensing and partnership opportunities between China and international markets.
  • Identify differentiated and complex products for the China market and develop appropriate partnering, regulatory and commercialization strategies.
  • Introduce and commercialize selected pharmaceutical products and development projects in China, identifying potential customers and strategic partners.
  • Identify "In-China for-China" opportunities, including international pharmaceutical assets that could benefit from stronger local commercialization partners or alternative ownership structures.
  • Source promising small and large molecule assets from Chinese pharmaceutical and biotech companies with potential for international markets, particularly Europe and the US.
  • Build partnerships with Chinese innovators seeking to expand internationally, leveraging the company's capabilities across regulatory support, market authorization, licensing, technology transfer and supply chain.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network across the China pharmaceutical and biotechnology ecosystem, proactively identifying new clients, assets and collaboration opportunities.
  • Promote the organization's broader capabilities across drug development, registration, licensing and supply chain solutions, working with internal teams to develop tailored solutions for clients.
  • Conduct market and competitive analysis to identify emerging opportunities and evolving trends across the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Represent the organization at industry conferences, partnering events and external meetings, strengthening visibility and developing new relationships.
  • Work closely with the global headquarters and senior management to align China activities with the broader international business development strategy.

The Successful Applicant

  • University degree with a scientific or relevant commercial background, preferably in Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry or Business. A PhD would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • At least 10 years of experience within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related regulated industry.
  • Strong commercial experience in business development, licensing, partnering or international pharmaceutical transactions.
  • Good understanding of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing, with exposure to both small and/or large molecules.
  • Strong understanding of international regulatory and quality requirements, including EU/cGMP and European/US regulatory environments.
  • Deep knowledge of the China pharmaceutical and biotech landscape, supported by a well-developed professional network.
  • Experience working on cross-border China/global opportunities would be particularly valuable.
  • Strong business development capabilities with the ability to identify opportunities, develop relationships and negotiate with senior external stakeholders.
  • Entrepreneurial, hands-on and comfortable operating within a highly international and collaborative organization.
  • Native-level Chinese and excellent English communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25% of the time.
